The NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Instructor Course prepares you to teach defensive skills that extend far beyond the home and into the real world—where threats are mobile, fast, and unpredictable. As an instructor candidate, you’re not just learning how to carry outside the home; you’re developing the knowledge and teaching ability to guide others through one of the most demanding areas of personal defense.

You will learn how to coach students to recognize danger early, avoid threats through intelligent decision-making, and respond decisively if violence becomes unavoidable. This course blends proven defensive shooting techniques, situational awareness, movement, drawing from concealment, and essential legal considerations—and pushes you to understand how to teach and demonstrate each skill with clarity and safety.

By the end of this instructor program, you won’t just know how to carry defensively—you’ll know how to train others to carry responsibly, confidently, and competently in public. You will leave with the mindset to manage high-stress encounters, the structure to deliver the PPOTH curriculum effectively, and the credibility to lead students through one of the NRA’s most advanced personal protection courses.

What are the Requirements to Attend the NRA Pistol Instructor Course?

• Must have not been CONVICTED of ANY felonies, Domestic Violence Convictions
• NO CURRENT Restraining Orders
• Must be minimum a U.S Resident (green card)
• Completion of the BIT Course
• Completion of the NRA BASIC Pistol Course
• Completion of the Basic PPOTH Course

Where will the NRA Pistol Instructor Course take place at?

Venue: At Public Safety Institute's training office

Where will the live-fire training and live-fire qualification take place?

You will be advised on the time and date of the range qualification. It will be during day 2

Range: Burro Canyon Shooting Park: 22100 E. Fork Rd, Azuza, CA 91702

There is a cost of $50 for the range fee payable at the range.

What is the required gear list for the classroom?

Pen, pencil, highlighter, and a notebook. 2- or 3-inch binder.

Wear appropriate attire, NO sandals or open toed shoes, NO shorts, NO Sweatpants.

What is the required gear list for the shooting range?

• Eye and Ear Protection (Electronic Recommended)
• Outside the Waiste Holster
• 600 rounds of ammunition, (you may buy ammo at the range)
• Lunch/Water
• If you do not own a firearm, you may rent one with us for $35
  

What happens if I cannot attend?

You can reschedule for the next NRA PPITH Instructor course.

All of our classes/packages, and courses are final, no cancellations allowed, and no refunds issued once enrolled in any course(s), class(es), or any of our training programs. If you cannot attend on your scheduled date, you can attend at another date or transfer course to another person.
